Explorer-in-Residence

Where knowledge meets the wind.

The Explorer-in-Residence program is designed for experienced professionals, thought leaders, and creative visionaries who seek not only to explore, but to contribute meaningfully to the evolving mission of Audax Ventus. Whether you're a marine biologist, documentarian, Indigenous knowledge keeper, technologist, artist, educator, or activist, this program offers space to deepen your work while mentoring others aboard.

This is not a retreat—it’s a responsibility. Our Explorer-in-Residence program invites those with lived expertise and a spirit of generosity to bring their voice, skill, and perspective to the edge of the map. You will live and work aboard our sailing research vessel, engage with diverse crew members, and help shape projects that bridge science, storytelling, and justice.

What You’ll Do

As an Explorer-in-Residence, your time aboard is intentionally flexible, allowing you to shape your contribution based on your background and interests. Typical roles may include:

  • Mentorship & Capacity-Building
Guide emerging storytellers, sailors, and researchers in ethical fieldwork, cultural sensitivity, or technical skills.

  • Field Innovation & Testing
Trial new low-impact gear, sustainable systems, or educational tools in real expedition conditions.

  • Creative & Academic Development
Use your time aboard to document your research, create field-based media, or develop new pedagogical models.

  • Collaborative Leadership
Support interdisciplinary projects that intersect conservation, Indigenous partnership, and cultural documentation.

You’ll also participate in daily crew life—from hoisting sails to sharing meals and shaping collective decisions. This is a space for egalitarian learning, where everyone is both teacher and student.

Who Should Apply

We welcome individuals from all walks of life who meet the following criteria:

  • 5+ years of professional experience in a relevant field

  • A demonstrated commitment to ethical practice, equity, and inclusion

  • Willingness to live and work communally in a low-impact expedition environment

  • Enthusiasm for mentoring others and engaging across disciplines

We strongly encourage applicants from underrepresented backgrounds, including Indigenous, Global South, and LGBTQIA+ communities.
